Chen Style Tai Chi

Picture
Chen Style Tai Chi is the oldest Tai Chi form, originating in Chenjiagou, China, known for its unique blend of slow, soft movements with sudden, explosive bursts of power (fa jin), low stances, stomping, and distinctive "silk reeling" (spiraling) energy, making it a foundational martial art that balances health benefits with combat application, and is the ancestor of other major styles like Yang. It involves alternating fast/slow, hard/soft, and features Cannon Fist (Second Routine) for advanced power, building deep internal strength and coordination.
Key Characteristics
Silk Reeling (Chan Si Gong): Spiraling movements that train whole-body connection, flexibility, and internal energy flow, crucial for developing power.
Alternating Pace: Combines flowing, slow motions with rapid, forceful releases of energy (fa jin).
Low Stances & Grounding: Deep stances build leg strength, stability, and rooted power.
Explosive Power: Includes stomps, kicks, and cannon fists, differentiating it from softer styles.
Martial Roots: Retains its direct martial applications, focusing on offense, defense, and redirecting opponent's energy.
Main Routines
First Routine (Yi Lu): Focuses on softness, flow, and building foundational silk reeling, with fewer explosive moves.
Second Routine (Er Lu, Cannon Fist): An advanced set with faster movements, strikes, kicks, and more frequent fa jin, enhancing stamina and power.
Core Principles (for health & martial arts)
Unity of Mind & Body: Unifies internal energy (Qi) and physical movement.
Internal Strength: Develops power from within through proper structure and intent.
Balance: Blends firm (hard) and soft, yin and yang energies.
Health Benefits: Improves balance, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness, and promotes longevity.
